The Columnist is back – and this time it’s bigger than ever.
As always, we’re looking for a brilliant writer to become IdeasMag’s weekly Columnist for six months. You should be ready to explore arts, pop culture and the issues that matter to our members. You’ll be paid £100 per column.
Initially it’s a two-month trial, but provided we like what we read, the winner will then continue for the full six months.
There can only be one Columnist, but this time round, there will be additional prizes for second place and eight runners-up.
Second place will win a month’s paid internship at IdeasTap (£300 per week), where you’ll be able to write regularly for IdeasMag and get feedback and career advice from the IdeasTap editorial team.
Finally, eight runners up will receive three mentoring sessions with a working journalist, paid for by IdeasTap. These sessions can involve career advice, feedback on writing, pitching tips – or whatever you feel you need help with.
We’re also bringing on board an expert judging panel to pick the winners.

This all sounds pretty sweet, right? To apply, we want you to tell us why you think you should be our new Columnist. You'll also need to submit a sample 500-word column on a topical cultural issue plus two pitches for further columns. Just remember not to commit any of these common mistakes. You must also upload further examples of your writing to your IdeasTap portfolio in support of your application.
This brief will close at 5pm on Friday 31 January 2014 and is open to IdeasTap members aged 16 and over. If you have any technical queries, please visit the help centre. Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances, including technical issues – so make sure you don’t leave your application to the last minute.
